RAR FAQ: Phishing RAR Files

Phishing RAR Files

English | Deutsch

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about dangerous, phishing, malicious and fraudulent RAR files:

Hi! I am a complete newbie to RAR files and I want to learn what to do with them. I was just wondering: What is a phishing RAR file?
  1. A phishing RAR file is a password protected RAR file, that has a notice in it, telling you, that you will get the right password after visiting a webpage...
  2. On that webpage you usually have to enter some personal pieces of information or sign up for something.
  3. BUT: Don't do it! Don't enter any personal information. Don't sign up! Don't even navigate to fraudulent, insecure webpages. No matter what they promise you. No matter what you think you might be able to extract from the RAR file once you have the right password. No matter how tempting: Don't fall for it.
  4. It's a scam. You will never get the right password. Stop trying. Stay away from the source that provided the fraudulent RAR file and move on with your life.
  5. A phishing RAR file can additionally be split. Read more on split files in the multipart RAR files section of this FAQ.
  6. Sometimes a phishing RAR file can be damaged and corrupted. Please take a look at the corrupted RAR files section of this FAQ to learn more.
Hi! I am an absolute beginner and I have a question: There are phishing RAR files, dangerous RAR files, malicious RAR files, fraudulent RAR files etc. etc. What is the difference between phishing RAR files and a malicious RAR archive?
  1. This is easy: There is no difference. It's all the same - well, almost: In some rare cases, special RAR archives, called 'decompression bomb' can also be a little bit malicious.
  2. RAR files are also sometimes called RAR archives, RAR documents, RAR packages or just RARs. Phishing RAR files can be called fraudulent, dangerous, malicious etc. etc. as well. But still: It's all the same: A RAR file that is used to try to scam you.
Hi! I want to experiment with a simple example phishing RAR file. Do you have a simple example phishing RAR archive that I can use for testing?
  1. Yes, here is a small phishing example rar file: example_phishing.rar.
  2. The file is as simple as possible: it contains a password protected file and a text file that is unprotected.
  3. The unprotected text file contains a note, telling you to go to a website to get the password. And there, the scam begins...
  4. So, this is basically how it works: Users who try to extract the archive only get the text file telling them to go somewhere (where they will be scammed). Unfortunately users with little experience often think that this text file is a message from the RAR Extraction software and therefore trust it to be safe and true. This is not the case! Beware!
Hi! I would like to uncompress some interesting files that were compressed using the RAR algorithm. I noticed that Windows does not support RAR extraction. How can I open phishing RAR files for free?
  1. There are lots of free programs that can open RAR files, e.g. RarZilla or Free RAR Extract Frog.
  2. BUT: There is no software that can open phishing RAR files, since they are password protected with unavailable passwords and only intended to scam you.
  3. Stop trying. Delete them all. Get other interesting files from sources that you can trust!
Hi! I have used the unrar tool for some time and it has always worked well. Today, however, I tried to open a RAR file, but it was not unpacked. There was a message that directed me to a site for the password and this site requires you to join up... I have done this twice and as yet been unable to access any password... Why is my unrar tool directing me to a site that rips people off?
  1. First of all: This is a phishing attack designed to scam you. Do not enter personal data on suspicious websites. Do not sign up for anything. Stay away from this type of RAR file.
  2. Important: Most likely your unrar tool has nothing to do with this. You were probably fooled into believing that a text file from the archive is a message from your unrar tool.
  3. Be more careful next time!
Hi! I downloaded all parts of a multipart RAR file, then I signed up on the website that I was directed to, in order to unlock the file, but still the extraction doesn't extract. Why does the extraction not work, even though I have signed up?
  1. Attention: This is a phishing attempt designed to scam you. Do not sign up for anything. Do not enter personal data on suspicious websites. Stay away from this type of RAR file.
  2. Stop trying. Delete the files. Get fresh RAR files from sources that you can trust!
  3. Beware!

  1. Please take a look at the corrupted RAR files section of this FAQ.

Hi! Okay, I've read every solution in this whole RAR FAQ, experimented with the example files and still, however, I have something that I want to ask. How can I contact the RAR FAQ support with a question regarding phishing RAR files?
  1. First of all: There is no way to provide free one-on-one support for all, that's why this FAQ is there. Ask a friend!
  2. If you still want to email, email me. Maybe I'll answer. ;-)
