Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about standard RAR files:
Hi! I am a complete newbie to RAR files and I want to learn what to do with them. I was just wondering:
What is a RAR file?
- A RAR file is an archive containing other files in compressed state.
- For many reasons, a RAR file can be splitted into lots of parts. Learn more in the multipart RAR files section of this FAQ.
- A RAR file can additionally be encrypted and protected by a password. Read more on password protection in the protected RAR files section of this FAQ.
- BE CAREFUL: Sometimes RAR files are used for phishing. Learn more in the phishing RAR files section of this FAQ.
- Sometimes a RAR file can be damaged and corrupted. Please take a look at the corrupted RAR files section of this FAQ to learn more.
Hi! I am an absolute beginner and I have a question: There are RAR files, RAR archives, RAR volumes etc. etc.
What is the difference between RAR files, RAR archives and RAR volumes?
- This is easy: There is no difference. It's all the same.
- RAR files are also sometimes called RAR archives, RAR documents, RAR packages or just RARs. But still: It's all the same: A file that contains one or more other files in compressed state.
Hi! I've downloaded an unrar app a few seconds ago and already installed it successfully. Now I would like to unrar a simple example RAR archive to see if everything works.
Do you have a simple example standard RAR archive that I can use for testing?
- Yes, there is a small example file: example.rar.
- The file is as simple as possible: it is neither splitted nor password protected and it contains only one file.
Hi! I would like to uncompress some files that were compressed using the RAR algorithm. I noticed that Windows does not support RAR extraction.
How can I open RAR files for free?
- There are lots of free programs that can open RAR files, e.g. RarZilla or Free RAR Extract Frog.
- Simply install one of the above freeware programs and double-click the RAR files.
- Congratulations. That's it. :-)
Hi! I am having problems finding files after I have extracted them. The particular site I am downloading from has a password for each download. After downloading the files RarZilla automatically starts up and a small window asks me to enter the password. I enter the password and the loading bar along the bottom edge of the window runs from left to right, but then I'm lost.
Where do I find the files I have extracted?
- By default the files are extracted to the folder that the .rar-file is in.
- If you have defined a default output folder, the files are extracted to that folder.
Hi! I would like to put some files on my website that I want to compress using the RAR algorithm.
How can I create RAR files for free?
- Sorry, that's impossible.
- The only program on the whole planet that can create RAR files is WinRAR - and unfortunately it is not free.
Hi! I installed an unrar tool on my notebook and I already unpacked some RAR archives. Today a little window was shown during unraring that asked me to enter a password.
From whence does one get a password?
- You do not need a password to use your unrar software - except the compressed file is protected by a password, then your extractor asks you to enter that password.
- Read more on password protection in the protected RAR files section of this FAQ.
- BE CAREFUL: Sometimes RAR files are used for phishing. Learn more in the phishing RAR files section of this FAQ.
Hi! I have used the unrar tool for some time and it has always worked well. Today, however, I tried to open a RAR file, but it was not unpacked. The file extension was somewhat different than that of previous RAR files. This ended in ".part7.rar".
How can I unpack a ".part7.rar" RAR file?
- A ".part7.rar" RAR file is a part of a splitted RAR file which you can not unpack without the other parts.
- Learn more in the multipart RAR files section of this FAQ.
Hi! I just downloaded a rar file and wanted to extract - but then my antivirus software alarmed me that this RAR file is a 'decompression bomb'. Is this some sort of terrorist attack? Will my computer explode if I try to open that RAR file?
Why does my antivirus software call this RAR file 'decompression bomb'?
- First of all: Antivirus software is sometimes helpful, but very often it only makes people go crazy, because it throws false alarms and scary messages. This is not a virus. This is not a terrorist attack. Your computer will not explode.
- A 'decompression bomb' is a compressed file that is compressed very well. Years ago one would have said: "Well compressed - what a good compression algorithm!" Today antivirus people make everything to appear as the end of the world - that's how they make money. Don't fall for it. In most cases the 'decompression bomb' will simply be a well compressed file, containing BMP images for instance. BUT: In some really really rare cases the file can be manufactured to flood your hard drive with data, e.g. a 90KB file that extracts to 600GB, but even then it should rather be called 'decompression data flood', because nothing will explode at all.
- RAR files can be really dangerous if they are used for phishing - and that is something your antivirus software won't warn you of. Learn more in the phishing RAR files section of this FAQ.
Hi! I just downloaded a rar file and started extracting. Then the following message comes up: "Zugriffsverletzung bei Adresse 01034F21 in Modul 'unrar.dll'. Schreiben von Adresse 000036B4." I have no idea what its saying.
What does that RAR file Zugriffsverletzung-message say?
- It says that your RAR file killed the unrar dynamic link library (DLL) that the extractor uses to decompress the RAR archive.
- Sometimes a RAR file can be damaged and corrupted. Please take a look at the corrupted RAR files section of this FAQ to learn more.
Hi! I downloaded a RAR file, but the extractor doesn't extract. It seems like it is corrupted.
Is there a way to fix a standard RAR file?
- There are lots of programs out there that promise to do so.
- BUT: There really is no program that can fix CORRUPTED rar files. Please take a look at the corrupted RAR files section of this FAQ to learn more.
